How do I get the mail headers from an email message?

When trying to troubleshoot a problem with mail, it's often helpful to get the full mail headers for a message.
These mail headers are usually not shown with a mail client unless you explicitly ask for them.

The following is an example Mail header:

Below are instructions for getting the full mail headers from various email clients.

Zimbra Webmail Client

  • Select the message for which you need the full mail headers.
  • Right click the message. You will see a pop-up window with a list of options for that message.
  • Select "Show Original".
  • A separate browser window will be opened that has the full text of the mail headers.
  • You can select, copy and paste this text.

Zimbra Thunderbird Client

  • Right-Click on the email message  for which you need full text of the mail headers.
  • Select View Source on the popup menu

  • A separate browser window will be opened that has the full text of the mail headers.
  • You can select, copy and paste this text.

Exchange Outlook 2011 for MAC

  • Select the Message. Do not open the message.
  • Right click (or ctrl + click) on the message in the message list and select View Source.


  • A separate browser window will be opened that has the full text of the mail headers.
  • You can select, copy and paste this text.

Exchange Outlook 2010

  • Double-click on the email message for which you want header information and select the File tab.
  • Click on Properties in the box on the bottom right. A new window, Internet Headers, will open.

  • Right-click in the Internet Headers window. and pull down to Select All
  • You can copy and paste the text from this window.

Exchange Web Access (OWA)

  • Log into OWA
  • Double click the email message, so the message opens in a new window
  • With the message open in a new window, click the letter/envelope icon to open the Message Details.

  • Header information will appear in a new window, under Internet Mail Headers.  
  • You can select, copy and paste the text from this window.
