I've received mail that my account may be deleted unless I respond. Is this legitimate?

We do send out notices to users when an account has been scheduled for deletion by the account administrator. The text of such an automated message follows:

Example of a legitimate deletion message from the server administrators:
From: "Penn Zimbra Help"
To: pennuser@upenn.edu
Sent: Monday, June 8, 2009 6:00:17 AM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern
Subject: Deletion of your email account

Penn User,

Your email account pennuser@upenn.edu is scheduled to be deleted
on July 1st, 2009

Please make sure to remove any necessary files from the
server as soon as possible.

If you have questions about this message, you must contact
your local support provider before July 1st, 2009.


If you receive this message and don't think that your account should be deleted, please contact your LSP.

Notice that nowhere do we ask for any information from the user and we advise that the user contact the LSP. An account or server administrator should never need your password to fix a problem with your account and you should never be asked to give your password to anyone. If you receive a message that asks you for your password or any other personal information, please do not respond to the message. This message may be a "phishing" scheme, a common scam to try to gain either your account credentials or your personal information. Compare this above legitimate deletion message to a phishing message.

If you receive a message asking you for information about you or your account, do not respond to the message even if the sender of the message appears to be someone you know or has an official sounding email address. Instead contact your LSP to verify that the request may be legitimate.
